It stimulates the brain to realease seratonin, dopamine and other chemicals that gives a positive feeling. It can also touch on themes that the mind was evolved to deeply react to, such as social backstabbing or murders in order to function in a world full of people. But what is entertaining to one person, may be boring or even a crime to another.

The word entertainment is derived from the Medieval Latin inter-tenere, which means to hold within. Other words with similar meanings are enthrall, amuse, and divert.
